How inventory turnover is calculated

Turnover = COGS ÷ average inventory value

Average inventory is the start and end values added together and halved. Days of inventory is 365 divided by turnover.

Higher turnover means less cash sitting on shelves, but too high can mean frequent stockouts. Use the safety stock calculator to keep a sensible buffer.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good inventory turnover ratio?+

It depends on the industry. Many small product businesses land between 4 and 8 turns a year; perishable goods turn much faster, while complex parts can turn slower.

Should I use cost or sales value?+

Use cost (COGS) and inventory at cost, so both sides of the ratio are measured the same way.

How can I improve turnover?+

Order closer to real demand, clear slow movers, and track raw materials separately from finished goods so you don't over-buy parts.

Stop calculating in spreadsheets. Let Stoccly do it.

Stoccly tracks your real consumption, lead times, and demand variability — and turns them into per-warehouse reorder points and stockout forecasts automatically.
